Proverbs 31:29-31 (emphasis on verse 30)
A wise woman fears the Lord
REFLECT
Between makeup and skin care products, salon visits and mani/pedis, the average woman spends nearly $4,000 every year on improving physical appearance. Who knew being a woman would be so expensive!
God is the one who created our form and features and called them good (Genesis 1:31). We see in scripture, women like Sarai, Rebekah, Rachel, Esther, and the daughters of Job were all described as physically beautiful. There is nothing inherently wrong with taking care in how we present ourselves. But today’s passage is clear that beauty and charm are fleeting, and pale into insignificance when compared to a heart that fears the Lord.
A fear of the Lord is an important theme in the Bible and it is the foundation of any real wisdom. Fear in this sense is used to describe a healthy reverence of God’s power and authority, acknowledging that He is God and I am not. A failure to properly fear the Lord always leads to sin and destruction (Psalm 36:1-4). This is why a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised!
RESPOND
Consider what it means to really fear the Lord. What role does this play in your relationship with Him? Why is this such an important aspect of wisdom?
