The world has a different authority than the children of God. As believers, we share in Christ’s authority over all things, which he extends to us through his death and resurrection. For Christians, the time to walk in our authority is now! God has given us every blessing and resource to take hold of and exercise our authority. He has given us the Holy Spirit who anchors and empowers our authority, and He has given us a name alongside Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of all. Just as the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus at his baptism, our authority is acquired and anchored through an encounter with the Holy Spirit. And when our authority is tested just as Jesus’ authority was, we respond with authority from the Word of God and with faith which comes from a submission to the Word and the Spirit of God. If you are lacking it, it’s available. Get alone with God until you are filled with his Spirit.

Questions for Meditation

  1. Is there a higher authority than politicians, presidents and earthly authorities? Who has this ultimate authority (see Matthew 28:18)?
  2. Where did Jesus get this authority from (see Mark 1:9-11)? Who does Jesus give his authority to (see Romans 8:11)?
  3. What can you expect to happen after being filled with the Holy Spirit and Christ’s authority (see Mark 1:12-13)? How do you respond to doubts, fears and challenges to the authority you have in Christ (see Matthew 4:3-4)? Do interruptions change your authority (see Mark 1:21-28)?
  4. Why does your authority hinge on your submission to God’s Word (see Matthew 17:14-20 and Acts 19:11-16)? What anchors and empowers our authority in Christ (see Romans 8:11)?
  5. How far is the scope and jurisdiction of your authority (see Ephesians 6:12)? What is going to continually sustain our authority in Christ (see Ephesians 6:10 and 13)?
  6. Where can you be filled with authority if you lack it? How much time have you spent in the presence of God to be filled with his authority? What commitments will you make for more time in his presence?
