The book of Exodus is a time of establishment for the nation of Israel. After leaving Israel, God is bringing the nation of Israel into new territories, new blessings, and new growth. But in order to lead them, God had to show them that the cloud was moving. The cloud was the symbol of His presence – ”the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels” (Exodus 40:38).

Questions for Meditation

  1. What does it mean to follow the cloud?
  2. What are times when you’ve struggled to follow the cloud of God’s presence?
  3. Why do we struggle with change?
  4. When have you changed out of convenience and comfort, and when has God led change in your life?
