What Is A Mission Statement?

A mission statement is a short but powerful statement telling others of your best sense of what God has called you to do and who He has called you to become. It includes your passion, spiritual gifts, and values. Mission statements are most often revealed through purposeful time in the presence of the Lord and inspired by His word.

Get alone with the Lord consistently and ask Him to reveal His purpose and plan for you at this moment. Take a moment to reflect on your life and look for patterns, doors God has opened for you, and things that weigh on your heart! Chances are those are a part of your mission.

Here are some questions to help you construct your mission statement:

  1. What life verse has God given me to steer or guide my mission statement?
  2. What character traits has God sharpened in me and wants to continue to develop? (Proverbs 10:9)
  3. Where has God placed me? (1 Corinthians 7:17)
  4. How can I surrender my gifts and talents for His glory? (1 Corinthians 12:14-19)
  5. What is the blessing that will result from me aligning with God’s will? (Romans 12:2)
  6. What kind of legacy do I want to leave behind? (2 Timothy 4:6-8)
  7. Do the significant leaders in my life bear witness with my sense of direction for my life? (Hebrews 13:17-18)
  8. Who is this for? (John 4:31-38): Above all, God gives His children calling, purpose, and passions so that He would be exalted and glorified through it. Look at the answers to the previous questions, if they all point to Him, you’re on the right track.

Reminder:

  • Mission statements are short; a couple of sentences to a paragraph. It is a motto, a summary of God’s purpose for you.
  • Get feedback; share with your leaders and loved ones to see if they are seeing what you have said. This can be a challenge, but is important.
  • Mission statements evolve; it is OK if they change over time. There are different seasons and in those seasons God may adapt the articulation of your mission. Continue to be prayerful and intentional about this area.
