If + Then = Overflow

In this week’s equation, God advises us on how we should think and feel about wealth, resources and finances. Our finances are something we think about often and care about deeply. Through books, the media and even conferences, many people seek advice in this area of their lives. However, the Bible is the greatest source of financial advice for us – Jesus himself talked about money more than any other single topic. 

Proverbs 3:9-10 says, “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.” In other words, if we honor God with our income, then God’s power will result in overflow. To experience overflow is to have more than you currently have or need; to burst out, as if breaking through a wall, or to flow or run over a limit. 

1. The first instruction God gives us to experience overflow in our finances is to honor God for His provision, which means to give Him the credit. Take a moment and meditate on all God has given you. Are there times or areas of your life where you may not have worshipped or honored God for His provision? 
2. In Matthew 6:21, Jesus says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” What does this mean, and why is this important when it comes to honoring God for His provision? 
3. The second instruction God gives us to experience overflow in our finances is to honor God with His provision. What is the first way that the Bible tells us to honor God with the provision we have received from Him? 
4. What is a tithe? Why is it important to God? 
5. Tithing, in essence, is a step of faith that says, “I believe God can do more with 90% than I could do with 100% on my own.” When you have taken this step of faith, how have you seen God respond? 
6. The third instruction God gives us is to honor God through His provision. When we tithe, we are giving 10% to God. However, God wants us to receive His counsel for all of our finances, not only 10%. What are other ways that God wants us to be wise stewards of His provision?
